Thank you for your interest in employment opportunities at Grey Forest Utilities (GFU). No active postings, but we are always looking for good people! If you would like for us to keep you resume on file, please upload it here.
General Information
GFU is a 30 employee natural gas and water utility operation, entirely owned by the
City of Grey Forest, which operates under the authority of a Board of Trustees. We presently
provide natural gas service in an area north of the Medical Center in San Antonio to the Kendall
County line near Boerne, and generally between IH 10 and Bandera and Boerne Stage Roads. The
Cities of Grey Forest and Helotes as well as parts of San Antonio, Leon Valley and unincorporated
areas of Bexar County are also served. We also operate a small water distribution system in the
City of Grey Forest. We currently serve approximately 15,000 customers.
GFU’s mission is: “To set the industry standard for customer service, to provide a return on our
owner’s investment, to provide safe, secure, challenging and rewarding jobs for our employees and
to be the best in everything that we do.” GFU has been rated the number one gas utility in Texas.
Our success is the result of the accomplishments of our dedicated employees – “Real People Who
Care.”
In our continuing search for excellence, we are looking for the best qualified individuals,
without regard for race, sex, religious affiliation, or country of origin, who will support our mission,
fit the culture of our organization, and who are willing to make the same high commitment to the
success of GFU as do our existing employees.
All prospective employees must meet the U.S. Department of Justice requirements to work
in the United States, in addition to possessing the education, skills, attitude, and physical
requirements for the job. Applicants will be considered strictly on the basis of their qualifications
for the position including, where applicable, the physical ability to perform the duties of that specific
job. Former GFU employees with a good service record who have been laid off due to lack of work
will be given priority over new applicants of equal qualifications. All employees must have a valid
driver’s license and a high school diploma or GED.
GFU prohibits discrimination against any employee or applicant in recruitment, examination,
hiring, training, promotion, discipline, or any other aspect of personnel administration because of
political or religious affiliations, membership in employee organizations, or because of race, color,
national origin, sex, age, marital status, sexual orientation , disability, or other non-merit factors.
New employees will undergo a 180-day evaluation period during which skills, capabilities,
qualifications and compatibilities with the job responsibilities will be verified. This evaluation
period does not constitute an obligation on the part of GFU to retain the employee until the end of
the period. New full time employees are eligible for all company benefits during the introductory
period.
Employment at GFU is at-will, the employee may resign at any time or GFU may terminate the
employee’s employment at any time. Employment at GFU does not constitute an agreement or
contract for employment for any specified period, for a definite duration, or for a particular position
and no supervisor or employer representative is authorized to make any assurances to the contrary.
During any natural gas emergency ALL GFU employees are subject to call-out 24 hours a day, seven
days a week.
Benefits – Full time GFU employees are eligible to participate in our excellent benefits program.
Participation in the benefit program begins the first day of the month following the date of
employment. No-cost benefits (for the employee only) include group health, dental, life, and
accidental death insurance. Optional benefits which are paid all or in part by the employee include
long-term disability, short-term disability, dependent health, dependent dental, dependent life,
dependent accidental death, and accident and cancer insurance. We have an excellent retirement
plan, employees contribute 7% of their earnings and GFU matches their contribution two to one. We
have nine paid holidays per year, sick leave, vacation, paid jury duty, maternity leave, military
leave, and tax-sheltered medical and retirement payroll deductions. We have a smoke-free and
drug-free working environment. After six consecutive months of employment you will be eligible for
college or trade school tuition assistance. After 24 consecutive months of employment your dependents
will be eligible to share in an annual college dependent scholarship. All dependents who apply for a
scholarship and maintain an average of “C” or above may receive up to $1,000 annually.
Application Process
- Written application (We cannot return any part of your application package to you):
— Your application must be filled out completely and legibly, even if a resume is attached.
— In order to be a qualified applicant your application must include enough employment
history to show that you meet the minimum experience requirements (if any) for the position. - Assessments
Applicants who qualify through experience and education (or based on other information
in your application) may be given skills assessments.
Office position applicant assessments may include written skills, spelling, office skills and skills
pertaining to a specific position.
Field position applicants will be given a practical field skills assessment in conjunction with their
interview. - You will be interviewed by one or more GFU supervisors or management employees after
satisfactory completion of any of the above assessments. A written question and answer
assessment intended to help GFU understand your work interests, along with problem-solving
and vocabulary evaluations may be given to those applicants who, in the opinion of the reviewing
supervisor, are best qualified for the open position. - After review of evaluation results you may be interviewed again by one or more GFU supervisors.
- After successful completion of the above interviews and assessments, we will perform a background
check described in the attached release. - After an offer of employment is made, we will then require:
–A medical exam – anyone offered a field position which requires physical labor must be
examined by a physician designated and paid by GFU. The physician will certify that you are,
or are not, physically able to perform the usual and ordinary activities of the position without
unreasonable risk to your physical well being. In the event that the physician finds you are not
physically capable of meeting the ordinary demands of the job the offer of employment will be
withdrawn.
–A drug and alcohol test – GFU is required by federal law to test all newly hired employees and to
conduct random periodic testing of all employees for the use of prohibited substances. The offer
of employment will be withdrawn for any prospective employee who tests positive for prohibited
substances, or who refuses to submit to such testing.
The hiring process may seem involved, but it is our intent to hire employees for the long-term. Only
through a thorough, objective determination of each applicant’s capabilities and individual attributes
can we assure ourselves that you are the best person for the job. This lengthy pre-employment orientation
is also intended to help you be assured that GFU is the right company for you. If you are hired, you may be
assured that you are joining a group of employees who desire to be the best. Excluding employees hired
within the last year, our average tenure at GFU is eight years. We wish you well in becoming part of the GFU
family of “Real People Who Care.“
